THE VISION
Our conviction:
Preparing Papua New Guinea for a robust, nature-based economy.
At NIU Nature, we hold firm to our belief that transitioning to just, nature-based economies is not only a possibility but an inevitable reality. The signs of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are glaring indicators that a shift is urgently needed. Governments, businesses, and civil society worldwide are increasingly adopting policies and practices that prioritize environmental stewardship. This global momentum underscores that the transition to a nature-based economy is not just feasible but unavoidable.
While some aspects of this future are still unfolding, we know some things to be true:
1. These economies will reward indigenous populations living sustainably within their customary lands:
Indigenous communities have long been stewards of the land, practicing sustainable lifestyles that respect and protect the environment. Recognizing and rewarding these practices will be fundamental to the success of nature-based economies.
2. Communities need to be well-organized, harmonious and the primary owners and beneficiaries of project outcomes:
Meaningful engagement and empowerment of local communities are essential for sustaining the preservation of biodiversity. Projects must prioritize the needs and aspirations of these communities to ensure their long-term success.
3. Without high degrees of integrity and transparency, projects will fail:
Trust and accountability are paramount in building successful nature-based economies. Transparency in decision-making processes and integrity in implementation are crucial for garnering support and community buy-in and achieving lasting positive impacts.
